Flat-rate vs. hourly moving: which one are you being quoted?
Home › Blog › Flat-rate vs. hourly moving: which one are you being quoted?

Two quotes for the same move can look nothing alike because they're built differently. Here's how hourly and flat-rate pricing work, and how to tell which is better for your move.
Two honest ways to price the same job
Movers generally price in one of two ways. Neither is a trick, and neither is automatically cheaper. They simply put the uncertainty in different places.
With hourly pricing, you pay for the time the crew actually works. If the move goes faster than expected, you pay less. If it goes slower, you pay more. The uncertainty sits with you.
With flat-rate pricing, you agree on one number up front. If the job runs long, that's the mover's problem. To make that work, the mover has to know exactly what the job is, which is why flat-rate quotes depend so heavily on an accurate inventory.
How hourly pricing works
An hourly quote has three parts: the rate, the number of movers, and a minimum. The minimum exists because sending a truck and crew across town costs the company money even if the job is small.
Hourly pricing fits local moves well. The drive is short, so nearly all the time is loading and unloading, and that's time you can influence. At Trinity Movers, local moves within about 30 miles of New Braunfels are hourly: $235 an hour for three movers and a 26-foot truck, with $50 an hour for each extra mover or truck. Our labor-only service, where you provide the truck, is $195 to $215 an hour for three movers with a three-hour minimum.
If you're quoted hourly, ask when the clock starts and stops, whether drive time is included, and what the minimum is. A reputable mover will answer without hesitating.
How flat-rate pricing works
A flat-rate quote is a single price for a defined job. It fits long-distance moves, where hours on the highway, fuel, and overnight stops would make an hourly bill impossible to predict.
Trinity quotes out-of-town and out-of-state moves as a flat rate based on three things: mileage, crew size, and the number of trucks. There's no hourly billing on those jobs.
The important phrase is defined job. A flat rate covers what was in the estimate. If the inventory grows by a garage full of tools and a piano nobody mentioned, expect the quote to be revised. That isn't a hidden fee. It's a different job.
Which is better for you?
If you're moving locally, you're organized, and you'll be fully packed when the truck arrives, hourly pricing usually works in your favor. You benefit directly from your own preparation.
If you're moving far, or you need to know the number in advance for a relocation budget or a closing, flat-rate gives you certainty.
If you're offered a choice on a local move, think about how predictable your move really is. A ground-floor house with a driveway is predictable. A third-floor walk-up with a long carry and a storage unit stop is not.
Why the estimate matters more than the method
Whichever way you're quoted, the number is only as good as the information behind it. A flat rate built on a guess will be padded to protect the mover, or revised later. An hourly estimate built on a guess will simply be wrong.
That's the reason Trinity offers a video walkthrough. We text you a link, you show us the house, and we quote what we can see. It makes a flat rate fairer and an hourly estimate more realistic.
Questions to ask any mover
Is this quote hourly or flat-rate?
If it's hourly, what are the rate, the crew size, and the minimum, and how is drive time handled?
If it's flat-rate, what exactly does it cover, and what would change it?
Are blankets, shrink wrap, and equipment included, or is anything billed separately?
At Trinity, pads, dollies, straps, and shrink wrap are included in a full-service local move, and we don't charge hidden fees. Our pricing page lays out how each service is quoted, and you can start a quote on our video estimates page or by calling (830) 837-4628.
