Local vs. long-distance moving: what actually changes

Trinity Movers box truck parked along a street beside a two-story brick building with wraparound balconies

The line between a local and a long-distance move isn't just about miles. It changes how you're charged, how you should pack, and what you need to ask the company you hire.

Where the line is

Every mover draws it a little differently. At Trinity Movers, any move within about 30 miles of New Braunfels is a local move. Beyond that, it's long-distance, whether you're headed to Houston, Dallas, or another state.

That puts most moves around New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, San Marcos, Seguin, Schertz, and Garden Ridge on the local side. A move to Corpus Christi or College Station is on the other.

What changes: how you're charged

Local moves are billed hourly, from $235 an hour for three movers and a 26-foot truck, because the drive is short and nearly all the cost is the crew's time loading and unloading.

Out-of-town moves get a flat-rate quote based on mileage, crew size, and trucks. There's no hourly billing, so you know the cost before anything is loaded. Our post on flat-rate versus hourly pricing goes deeper on the difference.

What changes: who handles your belongings

This is the one most people don't know to ask about. In the moving industry, it's common for long-distance shipments to be consolidated with other households, transferred between trucks, or handed to a different carrier for part of the trip. Trinity doesn't do that. We never outsource your move. You get a dedicated truck and crew, with no transfers and no third-party carriers, and the same crew that loads your home delivers it. Delivery is scheduled.

Whoever you hire, ask the question directly: will my things stay on one truck with one crew the whole way?

What changes: how you should pack

On a local move, a box rides in the truck for half an hour. On a long move it rides for hours, over highway joints and rough patches. Packing that would survive a trip across town may not survive a trip across Texas.

As general guidance, use sturdier boxes, fill every box completely so nothing shifts, wrap breakables individually, and don't leave anything loose. Furniture should be padded and wrapped, which our crew does on every long-distance move. If you'd rather not take chances with the kitchen and the glass, our packing service can handle just the fragile items.

What changes: your timeline

We recommend booking local moves one to two weeks ahead, especially for weekends, and long-distance moves two to three weeks ahead.

Long-distance moves also need more planning on your end. Think about your travel, where you'll sleep the night the house is empty, when utilities start at the new address, and what you'll need with you in the car.

Dates deserve extra attention. On a local move, a closing that slips by a day is an inconvenience. On a long-distance move it can leave you in a different city from your furniture. If there's any chance of a gap between leaving one home and getting the keys to the next, ask about storage when you request your estimate, so there's a plan before you need one. And if your move is tied to a report date or a new job, tell your mover which dates are fixed and which have some give.

What doesn't change

The crew, for one. Local or long-distance, it's Trinity's own trained movers, not temp labor. Furniture gets padded and wrapped either way. And the estimate can start the same way, with a video walkthrough, so the quote is based on what you actually have.

That matters most on a long-distance move, because a flat rate depends on an accurate inventory.
