A moving checklist for New Braunfels, week by week

Moves feel overwhelming when everything lands in the last week. Spread it out and it's manageable. Here's a simple timeline, with a few things that are specific to moving around here.
Four to six weeks out: decide and declutter
Start by deciding how much of the move you want to do yourself. A full-service move means a crew loads, drives, and unloads. Labor-only means you rent the truck and hire movers for the lifting. Adding packing means you hand off the boxes as well. Each costs differently, and knowing which you want makes getting estimates much simpler.
This is also the time to declutter. Go room by room and be honest with yourself. Garages and closets are where the biggest wins are.
If you're moving during the summer, or at the end of a month, start early. Those are the busiest times for movers in New Braunfels, as they are everywhere.
Three to four weeks out: get estimates and book
Get your estimates now. For long-distance moves, we recommend booking two to three weeks ahead. For local moves, one to two weeks is usually enough, and weekends go first.
When you request an estimate from Trinity, we'll text you a link for a video walkthrough so the quote is based on what you really have. Ask any mover you're considering whether the price is hourly or flat-rate, what the minimum is, and what's included.
If your dates don't line up, because you're closing on one house before the next is ready, ask about storage now rather than the week of the move.
Order packing supplies if you're packing yourself. You'll need more boxes than you think, along with good tape and plenty of packing paper.
Two to three weeks out: start packing and handle the paperwork
Pack the things you won't miss first: off-season clothes, books, decorations, the guest room, and the good china. Label every box with the room it's going to and a few words about what's in it. You'll thank yourself later.
Take care of the address changes. File a change of address with the Postal Service, and update your bank, insurance, employer, and subscriptions.
Schedule your utilities. Around New Braunfels, that often means New Braunfels Utilities for electric, water, and sewer inside the city, and a cooperative or another provider if you're outside it, so check what serves your new address. Set internet installation early, because appointment slots can run a week or more out.
If you have children changing schools, contact the new district about enrollment and records.
The final week
Finish packing everything except daily essentials. By the night before, the only things not in boxes should be what you need to sleep, get dressed, and make coffee.
Pack a first-night box and keep it with you: medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, paper towels, and whatever the kids or pets can't do without.
Confirm the details with your movers, including the arrival time, both addresses, and gate codes. If either home is in an apartment community or an HOA neighborhood, check the rules on truck parking and reserve the elevator if there is one.
Defrost and dry the freezer if it's coming with you. Drain the fuel from mowers and trimmers, and set aside anything movers can't carry, like propane tanks and paint.
Keep valuables, documents, and irreplaceable items in your own car.
Move day
Be ready when the crew arrives. On an hourly move, being fully packed is the biggest thing you can do to keep the cost down.
Walk the crew through the house first. Point out what's fragile, what's staying, and anything that needs special handling. Then let them work. A trained crew has a system for loading, and it goes quicker when they can follow it.
Keep the path clear and keep kids and pets somewhere safe and out of the way. In a Texas summer, have cold water on hand for everyone, yourself included.
Before the truck leaves, do a final walk through every room, closet, and cabinet, and check the garage and the yard. At the new place, stand near the door and direct traffic. Labeled boxes make this part easy.
A few local notes
If you're moving near downtown, Gruene, or the rivers between Memorial Day and Labor Day, remember that weekend traffic gets heavy. An early start helps.
Older homes near the center of town can have narrow doors and tight staircases. Measure large furniture ahead of time and let your movers know what might need to come apart.
Moving to a Hill Country property with a steep or gravel drive? Show it to your mover ahead of time. It affects where the truck can park and how long the carry is.
