When labor-only moving help makes sense, and when it doesn't

Driving the truck yourself can save real money. Lifting the sleeper sofa yourself usually doesn't. Labor-only help is the middle path, and here's how to tell if it fits your move.
What labor-only means
With a labor-only move, you provide the truck, trailer, or container, and the moving company provides the people. At Trinity Movers, that covers loading and unloading, heavy lifting and placement, disassembly and reassembly of furniture, and coordinating apartment walk-ups and elevators.
You keep control of the truck and the schedule. We take the part that hurts.
When it's the right call
You've already rented a truck. If you've booked a U-Haul, a Penske, or any other rental, a trained crew can load it far better than friends can. A well-loaded truck is tight from floor to ceiling, heavy items low and forward, and nothing able to shift. That's a skill, and it's the difference between arriving with your furniture intact and arriving with it rearranged.
You're using a moving container. With PODS, U-Pack, and similar services, the container travels without you. How it's packed is the only protection your things have.
You're moving a long way on a budget. Driving a rental yourself and hiring help on the loading end is a common way to cut the cost of a long move.
You're not changing addresses at all. Rearranging furniture, moving a bedroom downstairs, clearing rooms for new flooring, loading or emptying a storage unit, or getting a delivery from the driveway into the house are all labor-only jobs.
When a full-service move is the better choice
Be honest about the hidden costs of doing it yourself. Add up the truck rental, mileage, fuel, insurance, equipment rental for dollies and pads, and your own time. For a local move, the gap between that total and a full-service move is often smaller than people expect.
Full service also makes sense if you're not comfortable driving a large truck, if you have very heavy or delicate pieces, or if you simply need the day to go smoothly. With Trinity's local moving service, the padded truck, blankets, straps, shrink wrap, and dollies are all included.
What's not included
It's worth being clear about this before you book any labor-only crew. With Trinity, there's no truck or transportation, since you provide the vehicle. Our movers don't drive your rental or personal vehicle. And packing materials like boxes and tape aren't included unless you arrange them ahead of time.
We can bring dollies, tools, moving blankets, and straps if you don't have them. Just tell us in advance.
How it's priced, and how to keep it short
Labor-only help is $195 to $215 an hour for a three-person crew, with a three-hour minimum, and each additional mover adds $50 an hour. Since you're paying for time, preparation is everything.
Be completely packed before the crew arrives, with beds stripped and drawers emptied. Stage boxes near the door if you have room.
Pick up the truck before the crew's arrival time, not after, and park it as close to the door as you legally can, with the loading door facing the house.
Rent furniture pads with the truck, and get more than you think you'll need.
If you're unloading at the other end in another city, line up help there as well.
Get the crew size right
Too few movers and the job drags. Too many and you're paying for people to stand around. The easiest way to get it right is to show us. We'll text you a video walkthrough link, and you can film what's moving, the stairs, and where the truck will sit. We'll recommend a crew from that.
